How it all started...The Known WorldJune 25, 2011In a fit of nostalgia, I was digging through some old stuff today and came across a concert poster from our old band, The Known World. I went over to Myspace to try to dig up the old site and through some struggles got most of the music working again there. However, that whole thing is an unmanageable mess and has been for quite some time unfortunately. So I'm going to post here instead. Get a copy of the original album or Listen to it on Myspace. The Story of The Known World I moved to Pittsburgh in the fall of 2004. At the time, I had been writing and recording demos on my own, with little plan beyond getting this material out of me. My roommate at the time told me in no uncertain terms that I needed to stop fooling around with the sad sap acoustic thing and get a band. So in an effort to start meeting people in the Pittsburgh scene, I went on Craigslist and started to respond to audition postings for singers. The first audition I went on was the last. Jim tells this story best and I have a recording of it somewhere, which I will try to dig up, but to my memory, they were the most terrifically stereotypical rock band I could think of - Jim had long hair pulled back with a red bandana, was wearing a vintage Elvis t-shirt and bell bottoms, Ben (later known exclusively as Patty) looked like Animal from the Muppets, all afro and gangly ferocious energy, Francisco (later known as Frankie Morals) was so slick, all smooth groove and rhythm. We started recording almost immediately in a basement studio built by Len Lanphar. I recorded vocals in the bathroom. It was a little miserable, but exactly what I assumed recording a small-town rock record was supposed to be. The liner notes from A Year Assembled tell the story: A year assembled out of scraps of inspiration, forged under the gaze of four whole seasons worth of try-agains, do-overs, andone more time boys...This album was recorded in three sessions. In March 2005, after a hasty three weeks of rehearsals, a first EP was recorded. Four songs were captured: Synaesthesia, Caught Between, Runnin' Ragged, and Good News Gone. Four months later, July's heat produced four more songs -- Rich Baby, Come Slow, I Decided, and When You Go (Stay). In December, stretching into the tender new year of 2006, four additional songs were recorded: These Words, Get It Right, Five Years, and All of Us... The songs are arranged here, on this album, in the best cohesive whole that we could sense. While there is a definite growth that can be heard in the material when viewed in this light, we still believe in the worth of each and every song contained on this collection. Please enjoy. Our first gig was at Carnival at Carnegie Mellon. We ended up playing again on the lawn of the Sigma Nu fraternity that afternoon. And we were off - writing, recording, playing two to three hour gigs. Having a blast. About a year later as we were putting the finishing touches on the final four songs that would make up A Year Assembled, Francisco decided that he was going to law school. And that was the first of many lineup changes. Dan Bozek was someone I knew from Steubenville, Ohio, where I grew up. I knew he was a good bass player and that he had some studio experience, so I reached out to him and asked him to play with us. This was great for numerous reasons, first, because he went from an acquaintance to a great friend and second because he was a phenomenal musician who was also a studio guru. We started writing and recording what would have been the second The Known World album. The working title was Little Volcano. During this recording, Patty went off to do his own thing and we recorded most of those songs with Pete Wilson on drums. Unfortunately, Pete wasn't able to continue playing with us and at that point The Known World officially died. We quickly reformed with some new people as Cry Fire, which is the band I still play in. Some of those songs made there way onto the first Cry Fire album Strangers. I will try to dig up those original versions and post them here as well. I am still really proud of all of these songs. They are so full of energy, heart and determination. We were all just trying to figure it out. We still are. Anyway, listen and enjoy.
